Frequently Asked Questions

Having trouble with Koala Chinese Learning? Here are answers to common questions and how to fix them.

How do I choose Cantonese, Mandarin, and English read-aloud voices?+

Koala Chinese Learning uses the built-in system voices on your iPhone/iPad. If read-aloud has no sound, sounds unnatural, or you can't find the recommended voice, follow the steps below to check and download voices.

Step 1: Check the voice inside Koala Chinese Learning

  1. Open Koala Chinese Learning.
  2. Tap the Settings button in the top right corner.
  3. Go to "Voice & Read-Aloud."
  4. Check the voice selected for Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.

We recommend the following voices:

  • Cantonese: WingChoose the Premium/Enhanced quality version.
  • Mandarin: TingtingChoose the Enhanced quality version.
  • English: AvaChoose the Premium quality version.

Tap into each language and use the green play button to test the voice.

If it plays correctly, the voice is already installed and ready to use.

Step 2: Download voices on iPhone/iPad

If you can't find the recommended voice, or there's no sound after tapping play, go to your device settings:

Settings App → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices

Under "Spoken Language", select "Default". Then select and download voices by language.

Cantonese

  1. Tap "Chinese."
  2. Select "Cantonese."
  3. Find Wing.
  4. Select and download the Premium/Enhanced version.

Mandarin

  1. Tap "Chinese."
  2. Select Mandarin.
  3. Find Tingting.
  4. Select and download the Enhanced version.

English

  1. Go back to the "Voices" page.
  2. Select English.
  3. Find Ava.
  4. Select and download the Premium version.

The exact label shown may vary slightly by iOS/iPadOS version or system language, e.g. Premium or Enhanced.

We recommend connecting to Wi-Fi while downloading. Wait for the download to finish and a checkmark to appear next to the voice, then return to Koala Chinese Learning and select it again.

Still no sound after downloading — what should I do?+

Please try the following, in order:

  1. Turn up the media volume on your iPhone/iPad.
  2. Check whether sound is currently playing through Bluetooth headphones or another device.
  3. Go back to the system voice settings and tap the voice to preview it.
  4. Fully close Koala Chinese Learning, then reopen it.
  5. Restart your iPhone/iPad.
  6. Make sure iOS/iPadOS is updated to a recent version.
